Andrew leads regulatory policy development and implementation for Helion Energy where he has been for the past year. He is a nuclear engineer by training and served at the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for the first 15 years of his career. He started in regulation of the operating nuclear power fleet and implementation of safety improvements in the US following the Great Tohoku Earthquake and tsunami. He then moved to developing a regulatory strategy for the accelerated deployment of advanced fuel concepts and safety review of small modular reactor designs. He concluded his time at the NRC developing regulatory policy and licensing preparations for advanced reactor concepts and fusion energy, where he authored the staff’s proposed approach to fusion regulation under the NRC’s byproduct material framework.
